SRAIS Grant for 2010-2011

In May, 2010, I received a $20,000 SRAIS (Special Research Assistantship/Initiative Support) grant from UMBC for the 2010-2011 academic year!  The title of the grant is “Development and Assessment of a Language Variation Professional Development Program for K-12 STEM Educators in Baltimore, Maryland.”  Linguistic scholarship is critical to understanding how language must be used to facilitate the learning of an increasingly diverse U.S. student population within K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classrooms. To help K-12 STEM educators better teach and serve linguistically and culturally diverse students, a group that has been historically underrepresented in STEM classrooms, this grant will support me to develop, pilot, and assess a training program in language variation with 40 K-12 STEM educators at various schools in Baltimore.  If you are a Baltimore STEM educator or know one who may be interested in this project, please contact me!
